Cheap Eats 2008

Weekend slackers arriving an hour before closing will still find a damn good sandwich at this grand dame of Portland's artisan bakeries. We recommend the hummus and feta with shaved carrot on wheat ($5) and a homey baked good, like a rich chocolate shortbread cookie ($1.25) or the multi-chocolated brownie ($2) with a ribbon of raspberry running through it like a flavorful current. It's nice to know someone in the Pearl hasn't choked on their own pretension. (SS)
