Cheap Eats 2009

This greasy spoon's motto is, "You eat here because we let you." Once you get past the tough façade, Stepping Stone is really quite endearing, from the music (expect lots of Dylan with occasional forays into '80s pop) to the decorations (action figures that fly whenever someone opens the door). I recommend everything on the breakfast menu, especially the fluffy eggs Benedict ($9) or a thin strip of Cajun-style steak with eggs ($9.50). If it's lunch you're after, a bacon blue-cheese burger ($8.50) goes pretty damn well with a cup of tomato-Gorgonzola soup—the soup of the day, every day. (CJ)
