Step away from the beguiling bakery case—filled with moist cakes, crumbly scones and Earl Grey shortbread cookies—and focus your attention on the stellar brunch menu at the new Kerns neighborhood outpost of this sweet cafe (the Water Street shop recently closed and will soon become Bunk Bar). A plate-sized bacon and cheddar Johnny Cake ($9) gets topped with tender braised greens and fried eggs, while the hashes and scrambles are enlivened with goodies like pickled jalapeños and housemade pastrami ($9-$10). And the biscuits and gravy—dear lord, the biscuits and gravy—it'll take a week to recover from that craggy black-pepper biscuit mountain topped with both herby, creamy, sausage-y love and fried eggs. Wash it all down with cup after cup of Stumptown, just the way the breakfast gods intended. Bonus: They started serving cocktails last month.
