Cheap Eats 2010

If you don't have kids, borrow some for an afternoon trip to Roses, a time-warped ice cream shop and burger bar that feels like a far more delicious, non-corporate version of Dairy Queen. Everything looks and tastes old school in a good way, from the bubblegum-pink tables to the pleasantly average burgers and dogs and wonderfully thin, crispy fries served in red plastic trays. Those fries are the kind of spud perfect for dipping in a thick, stand-a-spoon-up milkshake ($3.95), the kind Roses excels at making, in flavors like nutmeggy pumpkin, blackberry, Oreo and tiramisu. The crew makes all the ice cream in house, boasting scoops of everything from Kahlua marble and a dense chocolate peanut butter to yellow cake mix, which really does taste exactly like a licking a spoonful of Duncan Hines box batter.
