Face it. If these past four years have proved anything, it's that the votes of thinking, literate people seldom count. So here's a chance to feel empowered. Oregon needs a Poet Laureate, and the quicker the better. Hell, California has one. In fact, there's a move on there to hand the laurel leaves to Merle Haggard. So why doesn't Oregon, a land of poets, have an honorary spot?
This topic (and many more) are thoroughly covered on www.oregonpoetry.com, where editor Steven Robert Heine claims a mission to name a poet representative for every town in the land. But until that happy day when political conventions will play second place to a massive national eisteddfod (for poets of Welsh or other origins), we've decided to take the ink by its horn and sponsor our own.
Herewith is a list of possible Oregon poets to parade as the thinking person's state representative. Vote for three of the listed names (or submit your own names). We'll announce our winner in the coming weeks.
