Cut of the Day: Mean Jeans, "Anybody Out There?"

Mean Jeans on Mars
Are You Serious?

The album title doesn't lie. These Portland party starters have blasted through the atmosphere with this one, and "Anybody Out There?", the standout track on an album full of potential singles, is as good as pop-punk gets. I can't imagine anything short of a magical Ben Weasel-Joe Queer-Billie Joe Armstrong collabo contending with this tune for supremacy in 2012.

With a wordless chant of the whoa-oh-oh-oh variety acting as backbone, "Anybody Out There?" finds Mean Jeans putting on a ridiculous display of its indubitable strengths: unabashed goofiness; melodies both melancholic and rousing; a sick sense for the strengths of those aforementioned nineties heroes; and, of course, a healthy and rewarding fixation on the Ramones.

I know, I know: that could describe every Mean Jeans song released thus far. Consider this the best possible version of a sound you already know and love. 2012 belongs to Mean Jeans. This is only the beginning.
