In the true spirit of community service, which is what the holiday was originally about, the United Way of the Columbia Willamette and Hands On Greater Portland have compiled a list of volunteer opportunities for each day of the long weekend, from sprucing up and painting schools to serving meals at Loaves & Fishes. Along with each listing is availability (some are already full) and the minimum age for the activity. Visit handsonportland.org for further information and to register.
Sunday, January 18
At 4 pm at the Kingstad Center (15450 SW Millikan Way), there will be music and dancing, presentations for the Beaverton Human Rights Essay Contest winners and Everyday Hero Awards, and an art exhibit promoting non-violence. This event is free, but be sure to bring extra coats and socks as Project Homeless Connect will be collecting donations.
The Zone, Portland's underage nightclub, is hosting a hip-hop celebration called One Love 4 Real. It starts at 9:30 pm and is open anyone age 16 to 21. Cover is $15 per person.
Monday, January 19
Sisters of the Road and Oregon Action are hosting a march and celebration. In keeping with the theme of community outreach, the march anticipates the plan to get the Sit/Lie Ordinance repealed in 2009. The celebration begins at 2 pm, is free to the public, and includes snacks At 3 pm, the march goes from Sisters of the Road (133 NW 6th Ave.) to St. Mary's Academy (1615 SW 5th Ave.) Then at 3:30 pm, there will be speakers representing Oregon Action and Sisters of the Road, along with City Commissioner Randy Leonard.
The “Keep Alive the Dream” celebration begins at 11 am and is on a continuous cycle of music, speakers, and dance performers until 6 pm. It is being held at Highland Christian Center (7600 NE Glisan St.) and is sponsored by the World Arts Foundation.
