A New Organization Wants to Stop Oregon’s Glaciers From Disappearing. But First, It Has to Put Them on the Map.

In May, two scientists—Anders Carlson and Aaron Hartz—founded the Oregon Glacier Institute, dedicated to monitoring the health of the states glaciers. The pair had their work cut out for them. Oregon’s glacier hadn’t even been mapped in 70 years. According to Carlson, that decades old, most recent count of about 35 glaciers was more than a dozen short.

Scientists Held a “Funeral” for a Glacier That Melted in Central Oregon

On Sunday, OGI organized a “funeral” for the glacier on the steps of the Oregon Capital in Salem. Attendees wore black and OGI Anders Carlson delivered a eulogy, which included a reading of Robert Frost’s “Fire and Ice.”
