9663 SW Barbur Blvd., 206-7462, paradisepdx.com.
Marijuana Paradise isn't breaking any molds, but the shop is doing most everything right. The vivid orange signage brightens up a bleary stretch of Barbur, and the storefront lacks the sketchy feeling of many of the boulevard's other weed dealerships. As far as themes go, tropical islands and cannabis go together like Sears and Roebuck, and the painted palm trees and hand-chalked menus do well to recall long tokes on the beach at sunset. The owner's Hawaiian roots keep Marijuana Paradise's design on the comfortable side of kitsch, the service is cheery and smart while still being low-key, and the bud is kind as a North Shore luau and varied enough to cover curious shoppers. MP's primary appeal may be its placement, situated relatively close to the drier suburban counties just south and west, but it's also the most well-rounded shop on the far side of the Southwest Hills.
