Your Guide to Free Comic Book Day in Portland

Hot off the heels of Record Store Day, we've got another nerdy holiday to celebrate: Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow, Saturday, May 7! And like its audiophile cousin, this holiday doesn't just mean sales—though there are some real good ones—it means parties in most of Portland's finest comic shops. What follows is a list of local events (though, if you know of any more PLEASE post 'em in the comments section below).

I've taken the liberty of adding, in bold and italic, below, notes on the few events that I'm super stoked on. But there really is something for everyone here, from the kids to the full-grown adults. Thanks to Ruth Brown for compiling this list. And away we go!!!

BRIDGE CITY COMICS

Free comics and celebrations from 10 am - 7 pm, including:

11 am - 1 pm:

Autograph signings with Portland local Matt Holm, artist on the popular Babymouse series of YA graphic novels! This signing event will also be the worldwide launch for the newest volume of Babymouse (Babymouse Vol. 14: Mad Scientist) and his brand new series titled "Squish"! Copies of both books will be available for purchase three days before their nationwide release!ʉ۬

Free comics from 10 am - 6 pm, plus:

We will have the crazy new art comic Dan Quayle published by our friends at Sparkplug, Teenage Dinosaur, and Gazeta. It features local cartoonists and is a tribute to Willamette Week cartoonist John Callahan.

We will have the all-ages dragon comic put out by our friends at Tugboat Press, which features a terrific cast of artists including locals Aron Nels Steinke and Andrice Arp. And we'll have all the Marvel, DC, Darkhorse comics as well.

[WW sez: We HAVE read Dan Quayle and it is funny/befuddling/pretty/strange...pretty much all of the above. We believe that John C. woulda dug it. It should make a nice collector's item.]
