CD1: Cornilles, Bonamici Rack Up Easy Wins

Rob Cornilles demolished thin competition to win the Republican nomination in the First Congressional District special election Tuesday night. At 10 pm, the Secretary of State's elections division tally showed Cornilles leading Jim Greenfield 72 percent to 12 percent. In the Democratic primary, which featured three current office holders—Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian, State Sen. Suzanne Bonamici (D-Beaverton) and State Rep. Brad Witt (D-Clatskanie)—and therefore should have looked a little bit more like a race than the GOP primary, in which only Cornilles ran a serious campaign, Bonamici mopped the floor with her two competitors. At this writing, she had 66 percent of the vote to Avakian's 21 percent and Witt's eight percent.

Cornilles and Bonamici will now face off in a Jan. 31 special general election to replace former U.S. Rep. David Wu, who resigned in August.
