Sweep The Leg

Joel Silberg's Breakin' has a plot—something about a struggling young jazz dancer trying to find her place in the lonely world—but the 1984 masterpiece actually uses breakdancing to present a story of racial tension and economic disparity in inner-city Los Angeles. Oh hell, who am I kidding? You want to watch this movie for the ridiculous costumes (dog collars! shark-tooth earrings! pink everything!), the epic montage and the scene where Turbo dances with a broom outside a convenience store. It's wack cinema at its finest. Mission. 11 pm Thursday, Sept. 16. Free.

  1. Best paired with: McMenamins Ruby.
  2. Also showing: Piranha 3-D (Academy, in 2-D), Black Dynamite (Laurelhurst).
