Here’s one way to handle a dreary, dark, rainy Portland morning: Stop by Sydney’s, ask for a couple of soft-scrambled eggs with toast, butter and jam, add a big cuppa joe, pay your $5 ($3.50 for the eggs and toast, $1.50 for the Caffe Umbria), and sit down with a newspaper or computer at one of the many tables in this bright, airy, artful spot. Your food will arrive shortly, on white IKEA porcelain. And your napkin is linen! At lunch there are great sandwiches, soups, savory pies, and a wonderful plate full of house salad and bread ($8.50).
