Beer Guide 2015: Hopworks Urban Brewery

Hopworks Urban Brewery

2944 SE Powell Blvd., 222-4677, hopworksbeer.com. 11 am-11 pm Sunday-Thursday, 11 am-midnight Friday-Saturday.

[FRESH URB] There's something about tatted-up barkeepers and 60's classic-rock ambiance that don't quite fit. But never mind. Hopworks' two locations (flagship on Powell, satellite pub on North Williams Avenue) have been wildly successful because they push bike- and family-friendly values. The sustainable approach to brewing and food also has wide appeal. Portlanders and visitors have no trouble relating to what they're up to here. Hopworks doubles as a great lunch spot and a place to bring the family for dinner. That's no accident. Owner/brewmaster Christian Ettinger has been in the beer and pub business for a long time and he knows the drill. The beers are solid across the board, from lager to IPA to stout and back again. The standard lineup is excellent, but scan the seasonal board for hidden gems. Totally Radler, a blend of lager and organic lemonade, is a summer treat.

DRINK THIS: HUB Lager is crisp and bold, a great choice any day of the week. Motherland Russian Imperial Stout is one of the best beers around when it's on.
