Bar Guide 2015: The Secret Society

116 NE Russell St., 493-3600, secretsociety.net. 5 pm-midnight Sunday-Thursday, 5 pm-1 am Friday-Saturday.

With the speakeasy theme hitting critical mass around the country, it's become crucial for any old-timey bar to match its black-and-white photos, bookshelves and candlelit tables with excellent cocktails steeped in the old school. Luckily, Secret Society has the sauce to back up its throwback aesthetic. Whether you're in the upstairs bar waiting for a table at Toro Bravo or on a date, the extensive cocktail list offers excellent takes on the classics, including an absinthe-kissed Corpse Reviver #2 ($9), a pitch-perfect Moscow Mule ($7.50) and a selection of Champagne cocktails. And while the whole "secret bar" thing has long since disappeared, the sounds of live jazz mixed with a Prohibition-era potion are enough to send you back in time, if only for a brief moment.

Happy hour: 5-7 pm Sunday-Thursday. $6 cocktail specials, $1 off beer and wine, food specials.

Entertainment: Live music.
