Boston for Portland?

So much for stodgy, old white men running the state. Today 27-year-old Cyreena Boston announced her run for Democrat Jackie Dingfelder's seat in the State House, representing District 45 of Northeast Portland, Maywood and Parkrose.

Boston, former Constituency Director of the Democratic Party of Oregon, grew up in Northeast Portland, where she kicked off her political career by canvassing for the Portland Organizing Project in 1990 (yes, she was 10). As an adult, she has worked to expand emergency services and civic engagement, and voter registration, particularly in her northeast neighborhood Sumner.

"My neighborhood is low-income. People are not afforded the opportunity to be engaged," says Boston, citing difficulty finding affordable housing and living-wage jobs as obstacles to civic involvment.

As a representative, Boston hopes to set aside funds for apprenticeships, preventive healthcare, and affordable housing. But first, Boston must beat out several other Dems eying the seat, like Portland Community College English Professor Michael Dembrow and Jefferson Smith of the Portland Bus Project.
