Sadly, our copy of The Simpsons Movie soundtrack did not come in the charming child- choking hazard pictured here. However, it does bear the words, "Baked by Hans Zimmer," perhaps the most accurate description of the Zimmer approach to composition. His version of Danny Elfman's beloved theme barely qualifies as a reheat, much like the rest of the score, which is indistinguishable from any generic Hollywood pap. That may be deliberate, but the real disappointment is the absence of any barnstorming songs like those offered by the show. The closest we get is the penultimate track, "Spider Pig," a surreal choral interpretation of, yes, the Spider-Man cartoon theme. It suggests the movie itself may be more odd than funny, and is followed by some sort of techno remix (what else?) as a closer. We may all need the Kwik-E-Mart, but who needs this?
The Simpsons Movie is rated PG-13 and opens July 27. The soundtrack drops Tuesday, July 24. The official movie website promises streaming music soon, but here's the trailer's snippet of "Spider Pig" to tide you over:
