They say all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately, the Year of the Dog is no exception. It's been a good trip around the sun, Fido, but it's time to retire man's best friend—and make way for the Fire Pig.
In just 11 more days, the Year of the Fire Pig kicks into full gear - but lucky for us, Portland will have a chance to celebrate nice and early. The place to be is the Convention Center Feb. 10, for the annual Chinese New Year Cultural Fair.
The 2007 Chinese New Year Cultural Fair will showcase both traditional and contemporary Chinese cultural activities including Chinese folk dance, instrumental music and popular oldies, dragon and lion dance, and Kung Fu demonstrations. There'll even be a Chinese puppet show.
Stop by at noon for the opening ceremony, where Mayor Tom Potter will be on hand as the VIP guest. A procession with two dragons and women dressed in Chinese princess costumes is not to be missed. Organizers say it will be a moment ripe with photo opportunities (i.e. check out the photo of the Mayor visioning down a dragon's nostrils at last year's event).
Famous people born during the Year of the Pig include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, former pro-wrestler-turned motivational speaker The Ultimate Warrior, Winona Ryder, Flavor Flav and Chiang Kai-shek. It's good news if you're a unborn baby too, set to enter this world in the coming months. People born during the Year of the Pig are said to be chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength.
So, go out and get 'em, little piggies!
