Portland's waited all too long for this day. All the family's come in from Dubuque and Columbus for the celebration. No need to sit on the edge of your seat anymore. The results are in. Out of more than 700 names submitted, our very own aerial tram cars will forever be referred to as...
"Jean" and "Walt."
Yup, kind of makes me think of my grandparents a little bit too.
Tram car "Jean" honors Jean Richardson, Oregon's first female engineering graduate. And tram car "Walt" honors Walt Reynolds, the first African-American to graduate from OHSU, which at the time was still known as the University of Oregon Medical School.
Continuing the name game, the committee also selected two station names derived from the Tualatin language: Chameffu, meaning "On the mountain," for the Upper Station and Chamanchal, meaning "On the river" for the Lower Station.
Now, and forever more, you'll be able to take Jean up the mountain, and ride Walt on the way back down.
