After a week of
controversy over City Commissioner
Randy Leonard's push to make today Tibet Awareness Day in Portland, here are the events on the calendar for local Tibetan activists.
• 10 a.m. — Raising of the Tibetan flag in front of City Hall, with speeches and prayers for those who died in the 1959 Tibetan uprising.
• Noon — March through downtown.
• 1:30–2 p.m. — Rally at Pioneer Courthouse Square, including petitions and information on happenings in Tibet.
• 5 p.m. — Candlelight vigil at Pioneer Courthouse Square.
For those who want to learn more, the
Northwest Tibetan Cultural Association is holding a Tibetan Film Festival this Saturday at the Bagdad Theater. The festival runs from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., and tickets are $5 per movie or $10 for the whole event.
