Three quick moments of disclosure before I opine on the latest problem
for an Oregon football player: 1) I am a season-ticket holding Ducks fanatic
who has followed this team's fortunes with childish passion since I was a child in the 70s. 2) I did a lot of dumb things in college. 3) And I of course believe in the concept of innocent until proven guilty.
But what the hell is going on in Eugene?
We're not even to the spring game. And this morning I learn about star running back LaMichael James' arrest on top of this still-unsorted mess
last month involving star quarterback Jeremiah Masoli and these charges
involving a kicker. Folks, when it's so bad that your kicker is involved in this stretch of embarrassment less than two months after the Rose Bowl, you've got more than a PR problem.
I agree with Charles Barkley that it's ridiculous
for any of us to hold athletes up as role models. And obviously going to the Rose Bowl raises the spotlight on what every one of the players is doing.
But here's the bottom line: While I'm perfectly capable of rooting for jerks wearing my team's uniforms (I did it for a lot of years as a Giants fan with Barry Bonds), I'd like to see some evidence down I-5 that coach Chip Kelly and athletic director Mike Bellotti realize how much those of us who drive on fall Saturdays to fill Autzen Stadium can hear many of us shouting like Vince Lombardi.
