Merkley Voices "Serious Concerns" with U.S. Involvement in Libya

Jeff Merkley

Put U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley on the lengthening list of Democratic lawmakers to express frustration with President Obama's decision to launch U.S. forces in a military intervention against Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

In a written statement, the Oregon Democrat's office told WW he "has serious concerns about America's involvement in a third conflict in the Middle East."

While Merkley spokesman Courtney Warner Crowell said his boss supports Obama's commitment to exclude U.S. ground troops, the senator's position against any long-term commitment in Libya is clear.

"We cannot become part of another costly intervention in a nation where we do not understand the customs and we do not speak the language," read the final lines of the statement.

And as we reported earlier this week, many Republicans aren't any more supportive of the Democratic president's Libya decision.
