Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut Maple Bacon Ale

"A foul abomination"

Rogue Ales' latest creation appeared in the WW office this morning, a collaboration with Voodoo Doughnuts called the Bacon Maple Ale, based on That Doughnut. Whilst we're loath to give any attention to this blatant gimmickry, after tasting it, we feel a civic obligation to warn anyone who might be considering splashing $156 on a case.

Here is a sampling of quotes from WW staffers at today's impromptu tasting:

"Smells like a candied ash tray."

"Smells like my mouth."

"Oh my God: No."

"Well, it is what it’s advertised. But that doesn’t make it good."

"This smells like the worst well whiskey I've ever had."

"It's like walking though a burning New England forest."

"If they wanted to make this taste like a bacon maple bar—the bacon isn’t particularly smokey, it’s the salt that stands out. So it misses the mark in addition to being a foul abomination."

"I need a cigarette to get this taste out of my mouth."

They have sucked over the last few years.. and RB's contributions are unerringly awful. But cynical as I am, I hold out real hope that the new WW editor and his years of experience as an actual journalist (!) bode well. Some dead weight is already gone, improvement noted in several areas. Let's hang in there, maybe?

I wonder what's worse--the smell of this beer or the way Rogue treats their employees. I'm guessing the latter. Nice writeup, but I wouldn't touch any of Rogue's beer with a ten foot pole.

Yeah -- like anyone would take some lady by the name of Ruth Brown seriously on a quick beer review. I have someone grabbing me some of these because I bet this one will be a winner. Ruth -- get your head our of your a$$ and stop being a hater.

LIES! This stuff is pretty good. I tried a sample at their store and it was exactly what i expected - a brown ale with hints of maple and bacon. It leaves an aftertaste similar to the donut it's named after.

Should you spend $154 a case on it? Probabably not, but I did for splitting with friends.
