There has been growing speculation about the intentions of State Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-East Portland), who is an announced candidate for mayor and who also holds a safe legislative seat. But according to state and city filings, Smith is not currently registered to run for either position.

Yesterday, an optometrist named Dr. Thuy Tran, a political newcomer, filed to run in the Democratic primary in House District 47, Smith's seat.

Meanwhile Smith's campaign consultant, Stacey Dycus, says Smith filed signatures with the city elections office last week. A city elections official confirms receiving the filing and says the county elections office is in the process of verifying the 100 signatures Smith needs to qualify for the ballot.

If Smith qualifies, he will bring to 18 the number of candidates vying to replace incumbent Mayor Sam Adams, who is not seeking re-election.
