The Service Employees International Union Local 503 has announced it's endorsing Charlie Hales for mayor. This follows the announcement last month that SEIU 49—the state's second largest labor union—would endorse Hales. Hales announced the endorsement Tuesday on Twitter.

Hales and his opponent, Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-East Portland), continue to split the the labor endorsements.

Smith has won endorsements from the Oregon and Southern Idaho District Council of Laborers, the Portland Association of Teachers and the city's firefighters and police union. Hales has won the support of the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Amalgamated Transit Union and the Joint Council of Teamsters.

SEIU 503's Leela Coleman said this about the endorsement:

"Our brothers and sisters in the union are affected by the mayoral race. We vetted both candidates and thought both were outstanding, but decided to support Charlie because he has experience, background and is ready to lead on day one.”
