If you were lucky enough to catch the soul scorching set by Matthew Shipp Trio at Jimmy Mak's last night, you were also given the inside track on the lineup for the 2013 Portland Jazz Festival. Managing Director Don Lucoff took the stage and rattled off a quite impressive string of players and performers who will be gracing our fair city with their talent from February 15-24.
But, lest we leave you hanging, we're happy to bring you the lineup to the festival here, as well as a schedule of performance dates, times, and places.
The announcement that Lucoff looked most pleased to make was the festival closing performance by a new trio called ACS, featuring pianist Geri Allen, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, and your returning local hero, bassist/vocalist Esperanza Spalding.
There's plenty to get excited about in the days before that, of course, including a For Portland Only performance by drummer Jack DeJohnette, who will be joined by Ravi Coltrane, George Colligan, and Matt Garrison; trumpeter/arranger Gerald Wilson leading two groups of local players, including a bunch handpicked from Portland schools; New York icons Sex Mob paying tribute to the film scores of Federico Fellini; the first Portland appearance by Kurt Rosenwinkel and his quartet; and a special appearance by the Afro-Cuban All-Stars.
Below is the full concert schedule as announced by the PDX Jazz Festival. We can only hope it will have you as excited about the fest as we are.
