Turnover: Restaurant Guide 2013

Restaurants from the 2012 Restaurant Guide That Aren’t in this Year’s Guide

Portland's restaurant scene is increasingly dynamic. This is a good thing. The past year has seen lot of new restaurants open, lots of chefs switching kitchens and, yes, plenty of good restaurants closing so the people behind them can move on to other things.

In the interest of transparency, for the first time this year we’re providing a complete list of the restaurants we removed from this year’s Restaurant Guide. A total of 29 restaurants—almost a third of the total— in our 2012 guide have been displaced from this year’s version. Of that, about a third are now closed. The other two thirds were removed because we found that they’d slipped or we discovered better versions of what they offer elsewhere.

But just because a restaurant is out this year doesn’t mean it’s out forever. Remember: Portland’s restaurant scene is dynamic. We wouldn’t be surprised to see someone behind these restaurants open our 2014 Restaurant of the Year. (Indeed, we’ve returned this year to some old favorites that weren’t in last year’s guide.) But, for now, the restaurants below are not among our 100 or so favorites in town.
