Roger Porter, the dean of restaurant reviewers in this city,
was told recently that his services are no longer needed by The Oregonian. For three decades, Porter has been chronicling the growth of the food scene in Portland. For 18 years, he reviewed restaurants for
WW, only to leave in 2006 to write for
The O. Porter was an omnivore but had a particular fondness for Jewish delis and French food. He could be
vicious when things weren't to his liking, but in person Porter was as sweet as an English professor, which he is (at Reed College).
Porter is not taking the matter of his dismissal lightly. In a good
