As usual, when Condé Nast Traveler published its 2007 Reader's Choice Awards
, the most cosmopolitan cities nabbed all the top spots for Best US Hotel. Chicago. New York. Los Angeles. Cannon Beach.
Wait…Cannon Beach? Yes, in fact. The Oregon Coast's own Stephanie Inn
nabbed the #3 spot in Conde Nast's prestigious poll, beating out big names like Hotel Bel-Aire Los Angeles and Four Seasons New York.
So how does a locally owned seaside getaway compete with corporate behemoths like the Ritz Carlton and the Peninsula? According to Meridel Prideaux, who does PR for the Stephanie, it's more romantic than those big-city boxes:
“For starters, we don't allow pets or children.”
Of course, the Stephanie has a lot else going for it. Chef Crystal Corbin and Sous Chef Aaron Bedard's four-course dinners have received national attention, and the two have been invited to serve dinner at the James Beard Foundation
in New York City, a rare distinction. As you might guess, service is stellar, and then there's the fact that each room includes a sea view, a fireplace and a jacuzzi.
But we think it's the mints. Maid service includes two chocolate Meltaways, custom created for the Stephanie by Phillips Candies, just down the coast in Seaside.
