Triple-A Baseball, One Year Later

Portland Beavers

For the dwindlng few of us who still attend Portland Beavers games, today is bittersweet.

Tonight is the Triple-A All-Star Game in Allentown, Pa. One year ago, the game was in Portland's PGE Park, drawing more than 16,000 fans and actually making the city seem for a night like it cared about minor league baseball.

Alas, PGE Park's re-configuration for when Portland begins play next year in Major League Soccer leaves the Beavers homeless in 2011. And options in the mix for the Beavers' new home include moves far from here — perhaps to El Paso, Texas; perhaps to San Marcos, Calif.

Yes, the marketplace has spoken. Soccer will do well in Portland. And baseball here has struggled save largely for a couple dozen warm-weather games in June, July and August each season. But it doesn't mean tonight isn't a total bummer for local baseball fans with less than two months to go in the 2010 Pacific Coast League season.
