Local activists are holding a series of activities, film screenings, and educational opportunities this week to raise awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Darfur.
Portland Dream For Darfur, which starts Wednesday, Nov. 7, will include a premiere screening of the new documentary
Darfur Now, followed by a panel discussion, and an event for middle- and high-schoolers at Lincoln High School called
Camp Darfur.
The five days of events will culminate on Sunday evening with a symbolic
Olympic Torch relay at First Christian Church downtown. The Torch relay, which has passed through more than 20 U.S. cities and several countries around the world, is an attempt—as the 2008 Beijing Olympic games draw closer—to draw attention to the Chinese government's support for the Sudanese government and military that have brutalized the country's Darfur region.
Survivors of past genocides, including a survivor from Darfur, will be in town to share their stories all week.
Here's a full schedule.
