Film Kids Rejoice: Hollywood Theatre Is Screening Kubrick On Film

"Clockwork Orange" and others will be on 35 mm, while "2001" will be on 70 mm.

Stanley Kubrick's work is meant to be watched on the big screen. The master filmmaker is known for directing visually spectacular movies. Seeing them on film—instead of the standard digital projection—is an experience unto itself, especially for films like 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This means Portland film nerds have plenty to look forward to this September.

2001, The Killing, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, and A Clockwork Orange <">will be shown from September 8 through September 11; all will be on 35mm film, except 2001on 70mm.

There are very few opportunities to watch movies on 70mm film nowadays. The format is notoriously difficult to project and requires special equipment to do so. The most recent examples—Quentin Tarantino'sThe Hateful Eightand Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk—could only be projected in the format in a handful of theaters across the country. Hollywood Theatre is the only theater in the state that's able to screen 70mm.

Seeing space canvases spread across a massive screen is a sight to behold and makes the entire event worth it. But any of these films will be spectacular. Tickets go on sale August 7 at noon and will probably go fast.
