Breakside Brewery

Along with being one of the finest breweries in Portland, Breakside is also one of the most prolific. Aside from a handful of staples, the beer list is constantly changing and consistently intriguing, with a guava-flavored IRA next to a French bière de garde and a summer wit that is a collaboration with the students at Lewis & Clark College. And since good beer knows no age (once you're over 21!), race or religion, the clientele at the comfortable pub is similarly eclectic. On a recent warm afternoon, toddlers and Australian sheepdogs threw macaroni and cheese at each other next to the sidewalk tables, while the usual crowd of beer geeks ordered innumerable tiny sample glasses (and, OK, bigger glasses) at the bar. The food is generally decent, but the happy-hour specials, in particular, are nothing to sneeze at—a plate of not-so-mini nachos ($5) could sustain you for hours. Or, at the very least, through another three or four beers.

Happy hour: 3-5 pm and 9 pm-close Monday-Thursday. Food specials with drink purchase.

Entertainment: Petting dogs and eavesdropping on awkward first dates at the bar.
