Octoberman, Spy Island, Mohawk Lodge

The Artistery | 4315 SE Division St., 803-5942 [map]
[FOLK] Marc Morrissette becomes Octoberman when he lifts the guitar and utters some fragile melody that cracks between strums. The words he sings add up to decent stories, which is a testament to the Vancouver, B.C., musician's ability with the folk formula. And, whether a good or bad thing, Morrissette's whisper-thin phrasing should sound immediately familiar to anyone with Bright Eyes on the brain. JOSHUA HEINEMAN. The Artistery. 8 pm. $4. All ages.

Ill Waters Project

Berbati's Pan | 10 SW 3rd Ave., 248-4579 [map]
[HIP-HOP] Ill Waters Project might not be breaking a lot of new ground—covering the standard lyrical themes over minimalist soul samples and piano-driven beats—but what they do bring to the table is an ear for melody and crafting catchy hooks without sounding overbearing on the mic. That Chicago sound really bleeds through as well, which isn't a bad thing by any stretch. CASEY JARMAN.- Berbati's Pan. 9:30 pm. Cover. 21+.

Heroes & Villains, Myshkin's Ruby Warblers, New Mexican Revolution & more

Dante's | 1 SW 3rd Ave., 226-6630 [map]
[GYPSY CARAVAN] This assortment of Portland bands has come together under the banner of Harold Von Killian's No-Ring Sideshow and Traveling Spectacular. Who, you should be asking yourself, is Harold Von Killian? Well, according to the press release delivered by those clever kids of parlor pop Heroes and Villains, he is a showman from Lower Slavovia who, "instead of going from place to place with a set group of performers...finds the proper acts in the town he is going to and has them put together a show that they can use his world famous name on." To which we say, "Bullshit!" But, really, whatever contrived theatrics it took to get this cavalcade of outsider artists under the same roof is worth the deceit. The grizzled, rattling Americana of New Mexican Revolution will start things off, followed Myshkin's Ruby Warblers', Heroes and Villains, MarchFourth and Pepto Dizmal and the Feral Clowns. MARK BAUMGARTEN.- Dante's. 9:30 pm. $8 advance, $10 day of show. 21+.

Detonators, Jesus Fucking Christ, Criminal Damage

Sabala's at Mount Tabor | 4811 SE Hawthorne Blvd., 238-1646 [map]
[PUNK] The Detonators formed in Los Angeles in 1979, which is a loooong time to go without rupturing, especially considering that the Detonators have been ticking since that genesis. After relocating to Eugene in 1987, the band's schedule slowed considerably, but its founding members kept the slow-burning fuse alight. These days, a revamped lineup keeps the flame alive with sporadic live dates and a 7-inch here and there, but the dangers of outright explosion are certainly unlikely. DAVE CLIFFORD. Sabala's at Mount Tabor. 9:30 pm. Cover. 21+.

Mythmedia's Nuclear Winter Formal: The Hunches, Hillstomp, DJ Thunder

Someday Lounge | 125 NW 5th Ave., 248-2900 [map]
[ROCK-'N'-ROLL HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE] Aside from the great paradox of this event—it's a fundraiser (as in money), and money will have no value after the apocalypse (isn't that part of the fetish?)—Mythmedia couldn't have selected a better band to wave the disorder flag. The Hunches' songs are equivalent to stepping on a land mine and surviving: powerful rock explosions with barely enough melody to remind you that you're still alive. The band's live shows are becoming infamous in Portland for blown-fuse stage antics, culminating recently in the band chucking a glass bottle and some TV dinners into a Crystal Ballroom audience. If there's music after the end of civilization, it's easy (and terrifying) to think this is it. MICHAEL BYRNE. Someday. 8 pm. $10-$20 donation. All ages. Also see culture feature, page 25.
