Needle Exchange: A DJ Questionnaire with Chelsea Starr

IMAGE: Mykl Foster.

Years DJing: Since 2000.

Genres: House, but I also love hip-hop, disco, funk and techno.

Where you can catch me regularly: My monthly party, Lez Do It, is at Killingsworth Dynasty the first Friday of the month (except this month, we are on first Saturday). You can also find me as a resident DJ at Saucebox and Judy on Duty at High Water Mark. I also play in San Francisco often, and other places like Palm Springs and Atlanta.

Craziest gig: DJing in a thong in 2001 at a peep show where I was a dancer comes to mind. Or in the wee hours at the EndUp in S.F. was guaranteed craziness. But my favorite gig continues to be DJing for women dancing naked under the stars in Yosemite at Fabulosa women's music festival each year.

My go-to records: I don't have any records I always play. I mix it up.

Don't ever ask me to play…: On a computer. I don't like having a screen between me and the crowd, and I enjoy the tradition and craft of mixing without a computer.

NEXT GIG: Chelsea Starr spins at Lez Do It at Killingsworth Dynasty, 832 N Killingsworth St., with Mr. Charming and Kid Amiga, on Saturday, Dec. 3. 9 pm. $5. 21+.
