First Candidate for Jules Bailey's Multnomah County Seat Jumps In

Eric Zimmerman, chief of staff to Multnomah County Commissioner Diane McKeel, says he'll run.

Eric Zimmerman, chief of staff to Multnomah County Commissioner Diane McKeel, today became the first person to officially declare his candidacy for County Commissioner Jules Bailey's seat.

Bailey, of course, declared last month he plans to run against Oregon Treasurer Ted Wheeler for Portland mayor.

In addition to his work at the county, Zimmerman is a captain in the Oregon Army National Guard. He served in Iraq as a platoon leader in 2009. A press release announcing his candidacy calls him "a proud member of Multnomah County's LGBT community."

Meanwhile, other potential candidates wait in the wings.

Brian Wilson, who ran unsuccessfully against Bailey in 2014, last week told WW he was interested in another bid. Gwen Sullivan, president of the Portland Association of Teachers, also said she was weighing a bid.

Marisha Childs, a lawyer who was part of the Emerge Oregon class of 2012, has also told WW she's considering running. So has Dr. Sharon Meieran, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Oregon House in 2012
