Willamette Week, Street Roots and Jefferson Smith Team Up to Moderate Portland Mayoral Debate Tonight

The event replaces the one The Oregonian pulled out of.

Willamette Week is teaming up with Street Roots and former state Rep. Jefferson Smith (D-Portland) to moderate a mayoral debate tonight at Revolution Hall now that The Oregonian has decided to bail.

The forum starts at 6:30 pm. Six candidates have confirmed they will appear: Ted Wheeler, Jules Bailey, Sarah Iannarone, Jessie Sponberg, David Schor and Sean Davis. And it's free! So come on down.

The Oregonian's decision to pull out of tonight's debate stems from an earlier call to limit the forum to just two candidates—Wheeler and Bailey.

Activists and supporters of the other 10 candidates who've filed to run for Portland mayor asked to be included. When they were rebuffed, they started organizing to disrupt the planned event.

The Oregonian on Sunday night canceled the live debate, citing concerns for candidates' and the audience's safety.

But Monday morning, owners of Revolution Hall said they were moving forward as if there were a debate. Wheeler announced in a press release he planned to attend anyway. Now, so are five other candidates.

You can watch a live video of the debate here.

GO: Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark St. Doors open at 5:30 pm, debate starts at 6:30 pm.
