The Sellwood Bridge Is Open

Someone has already abandoned their car on it.

The new Sellwood Bridge opened at 8 pm on Monday night. It had been closed since Feb. 25 for construction, with (horrible, terrible) traffic rerouted Ross Island Bridge.

A car has already gotten stuck, having driven mistakenly onto the bike path this morning. The driver fled the scene and traffic was stopped in both directions for 30 minutes. The accident may be a bad omen, but at least the bike lane proved it can hold a pickup truck.

The bridge project still isn't complete, however, and won't be until November. But at least it can withstand a major earthquake now. What's up now, Really Big One!

The metal from the old Sellwood Bridge will be broken down and almost entirely recycled.
