World Cup Champion Soccer Player Abby Wambach Arrested for DUII in Portland

She failed a field sobriety test and a breath test, police say.

Retired soccer star Abby Wambach was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants on Saturday night in downtown Portland.

Portland police say Wambach, driving a 2014 Range Rover, ran a red light at Southwest 13th Avenue and Taylor Street. She failed a field sobriety test, and was taken to the Portland Police Bureau Central Precinct, where she failed a breath test.

Wambach, 35, is a two-time Olympic gold medalist who led the U.S. women's soccer team to a World Cup victory last July. She retired shortly after that championship.

In 2012, she bought a home in Portland.

Here is the full statement from the Portland Police Bureau:

UPDATE, 2:15 pm: Wambach has released an apology on her Facebook page.

"I take full responsibility for my actions," she writes. "This is all on me. I promise that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that my horrible mistake is never repeated."
