Sen. Jeff Merkley Will Speak Monday Night at Democratic National Convention

The Bernie Sanders-supporting Oregon senator will try to make peace in Philadelphia.

As the Democratic Party presidential primary dragged into protracted battle this spring U.S. Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) was front and center.

So it makes sense he'll be onstage as the Dems try to make peace in Philadelphia.

Merkley will get a primetime speaking spot Monday night at the Democratic National Convention. His office tells WW the senator will speak at 5 pm Pacific Standard Time.

Roll Call first reported Merkley's speaking invite today. Merkley becomes the second Oregon elected official to speak at the convention, joining Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek.

Merkley played a prominent role in shuttle diplomacy between presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton and challenger Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.). Merkley was the only U.S. Senator to endorse Sanders, and the Sanders' camp briefly pushed Merkley as a possible Clinton vice-presidential pick.

Roll Call notes that Merkley will join a roster of Monday speakers from the left wing of the party—including Sanders.
