Portland's Cannabis Consigliere Leaves Top Pot Law Firm

Amy Margolis is setting up her own weed-focused law practice after leaving Emerge Law Group.

A prominent cannabis lawyer has left one of Oregon's biggest marijuana law firms.

Amy Margolis has left Emerge Law Group, a Portland firm that has played a key role in shaping the state's recreational cannabis policy.

Margolis tells WW she has set up her own weed-focused law firm, Margolis Legal, in Portland after leaving Emerge.

"There's no bad reason," says Margolis. "I've been practicing on my own for a long time. I was ready to engage with clients in a new way."

The Seattle-raised Margolis has worn several hats during the implementation of recreational marijuana. Along with her work as a lawyer, she founded the Oregon Cannabis PAC, a political action group that pushed state lawmakers to craft rules friendly to local cannabis businesses.

Last October, WW described her as "the most prominent face of Oregon marijuana regulation."

Her old colleagues say Emerge Law Group is continuing to grow, with 11 full-time lawyers.

"The growth of the Emerge Law Group, with Amy as part it, reflects the incredible growth of the industry," says Matt Goldberg. "We wish her well in her future endeavors."
