Oregon's Top Elections Official Pans Trump's Election-Rigging Concerns

Secretary of state Jeanne Atkins attests to Oregon's ballot security.

As Oregonians begin receiving ballots for the Nov. 8 general election, secretary of state Jeanne Atkins today acted to dispel the conspiracy theories that GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump has raised, at least as they relate to Oregon's vote-by-mail ballots.

"There are many safeguards to our elections system," Atkins wrote in a letter to lawmakers today.

"In every county, ballots are secured from the moment they are delivered whether through the mail or to a ballot drop box. Every signature on every ballot is verified by a trained elections official. Questions about the intent of voters are resolved by election workers working in cross-party teams or by trusted staff. Our paper ballots are counted by vote tallying machines NOT connected to the internet, and all ballots are preserved so that hand counts can be completed if necessary. Audits in each election cycle verify the tally systems' accuracy."
