CAN’T WAIT FOR THE REMATCH
Great work, Jody [“Jody De Simone Wants to Kick Your Ass,” WW, Jan., 07, 2009). Now get ready for the wonderful classic of fighting sports—REMATCH!

There are many superbly skilled female fighters out there. They just don’t get much of an opportunity to compete in public. Women like Gina Carano are changing that. Dana White of the UFC has recently changed his staunch opinion against female fights, saying he will consider promoting them in the future.

Although Jody’s experience is quite limited, some people do possess natural talent that allows them to do things in weeks that take years for others. It will be fun to see how Jody’s career progresses.

This article was written really well. I love the fact that the writer included a lot of facts about MMA but did it in a way that captured a real-time story too. Wow, this fight was intense. I think I’ve found a new interest. Perhaps I’ll spend a bit more time watching female MMA now. Loved the story.

Brain-dead “entertainment” for a brain-dead culture. But first...let’s set the scene that plays out all over the Willamette Valley. You get in the car and make a run to Winco and Costco...load up on chips, dips, thinly sliced pepperoni, the usual crap. You come home and strategically position yourself in the middle of your City Liquidators Naugahyde couch and stare into the abyss of your new, practically free Bowflex 56-inch LCD Digital Interactive Surround Sound System. You turn on the fight. You sit there. Now look at yourself. You are doing nothing...your diaphragm sucks up and down, your heart rate elevates. You pick a chip, scoop some dip and target your mouth. Bullseye. You crunch it up...you crunch your taco chip...you crunch it up. Now...that’s entertainment.

Kicking ass seems to be an American fantasy. Everybody from the president on down is gonna kick someone’s ass. Which is odd because it appears that America is the one getting its ass kicked the hardest!

I was surprised to see "racism is over!" in your Weekly Fix section, but it made sense with the next line "uh, nevermind". Racism will never leave the headlines as long as the media keeps churning it up for the sake of grabbing people's attention. Do you realize you're calling Officer Myers racist? On what basis? There is zero investigative work, just the racial composition of his list of "frequent downtown lawbreakers". Should the racial mix of criminals perfectly match the racial mix of the population? If not, how close does it need to be? Let me pose a logical conclusion here. We can all agree that African-Americans are more likely to be "economically disadvantaged", yes? We can all agree that "economically disadvantaged" people are more likely to commit crimes, yes? Then, it should not be surprising that African-Americans have a greater presence on such a list. This is not information that should be used to judge people by any means. It simply means that you need to do more than look at some percentages and use that to call a police officer a racist. I hate to see racial divides perpetuated by bullshit articles written by people who should be capable of better work.

I was Sam Adam's mailman for about 2 years when he lived at 2031 NW Johnson St, very nearly across the street from his then boss, Vera Katz. While Vera was always professional and courteous with me Adams was consistently an arrogant asshole. If I had "accountable mail" (certified mail or the like)which required a signature Adams would sign then throw the pen which I gave him to sign for the mail on the ground in front of me. This is a nasty human being who does not deserve the approval of the people of Portland.

As counterpoint to "Bill" from Milwaukee, I grew up in a black neighborhood in Washington,D.C. I went to an all black school right through Jr. High. Many of those years I was the ONLY white kid in the whole school. I made many friends, as had my whole family.Seldom, maybe two, three times in all those years was I ever picked-on or harrassed. I'd say the chances of that happening to a black kid in an all white school are pretty much zero. A black kid in an all white school would undoubtedly be harrassed, beaten, humiliated on a daily basis. It sounds like "Bill" may have had what I call a sense of "white entitlement". Likely picked up from the adults around him as a child. You want to get along with people? You take them at face value, see them as human beings just like yourself. Treat people with respect and you'll get it back. It's all about how you carry yourself. Sounds like "Bill" never attempted any positive interaction with blacks. I've known all too many whites who carry "white entitlement" have egomaniacal issues with being the priviledged ones......
