THE BEDROOM HAS NO PLACE IN POLITICS
[Re: “Adams’ Admission,” WWire, Jan. 19, 2009:] I’d like to write in defense of all who hold public office and state that the bedroom should not have a place in politics. In this case especially, Mayor Sam Adams has a fantastic record of leadership and public service. He has hit the ground running with plans to reinvigorate the local economy and improve the dismal Portland high-school dropout rate. What he chooses to do in his personal life should have no place in our news. If he does something illegal, then make a news story out of it. Otherwise, this is just gossip. If I wanted that, I’d be reading OK! Clean it up please, WW.

COMPARED TO FOXWORTH...
So let me get this straight—Derrick Foxworth, by all accounts a good cop, gets publicly humiliated in the local media, demoted and shamed by holier-than-thou white liberal Tom Potter, and eventually takes an early retirement for having a totally consensual and age-appropriate sexual relationship with a coworker, which he never denies.

Sam has a consensual but possibly illegal sexual relationship with a kid he is mentoring who is half his age, publicly and forcefully lies about it and talks the kid into lying about it, makes all kinds of shady moves in an apparent attempt to cover it up, then admits he lied only when faced with irrefutable evidence of the truth. And the same white Portland liberals who stood by while Foxworth, who is black and a cop and carries a gun, gets shafted are now defending Adams and saying it’s nobody’s business because he’s white and gay and likes bicycles and hates plastic bags.

Awesome. I mean that—I am truly filled with awe.

CONGRATS TO WW
I’m not sure how I feel about it all, but my compliments on another great job of reporting. It’s amazing to think of what we wouldn’t know without Willamette Week.

LIES, LIES, LIES
On the eve of such an important day in politics, this is just such a disgusting portrayal of what can go wrong when a person holds himself above the office he is trying to attain. I really could care less about the sex... I’m just pissed beyond words about the betrayal and lies. Desperately inexusable.

Dear Mayor Adams,

You mustn't let the corporate media distract you from what you intend to do for the city of Portland. We have always believed in you and I personally know that you must move forward to establish that which you are capable of. You are not just a man, or a mayor you are a Northwest citizen who has shown a commitment to helping Portland and Oregon serve the common need for the people. I for one support you. In this time of healing, find your roots and growth will come.

I need you Mr. Adams in office.

Sincerely,

drift mavyn

Bob, lol... how true. I never thought of it from that angle. And this is coming from a white guy often branded a liberal.

Let's keep in mind one fundamental and very serious difference between the cases of Sam Adams and Derrick Foxworth: Foxworth was accused of sexual harassment in the workplace. Sam Adams was accused of having consensual sex with someone who, they both say, were adults at the time.

I want Sam Adams to stay in office. This is a waste of public time. Let him get to work.

Iris - You are incorrect. The original accusation, by Ball, was that Sam had sex with a minor. Consensual or not, that's considered statutory rape and it's illegal.

The Attorney General isn't investigating this because Sam had sex with an adult; he's investigating because there's a question of whether he had sex with a minor.

I believe that Sam did not have sex with a minor and I also believe he'll make a great mayor if he shows up for work. Regardless, supporters of Sam should not forget that the original question was a legal issue, not the privacy issue that some are trying to make it.
