2010 kicks off with the second Fertile Ground Festival, Portland’s annual celebration of new work in the performing arts. This time the 12-day event features more than 50 world premieres by Portland artists. Jan. 22-Feb. 2. Fertilegroundpdx.org.

Third Rail Rep is growing by leaps and bounds. In 2010, the six-year-old company will stage its first commission: Craig Wright’s The Gray Sisters, a family drama penned specifically for Third Rail’s excellent actresses. April 30-May 23. thirdrailrep.org.

White Bird hosts Benoit-Swan Pouffer’s ridiculously talented 16-member Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, which is slated to perform a serpentine new work, Orbo Novo, from in-demand choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, among other marvels. Wednesday, May 5. whitebird.org.
