It’s About The City, Not Sam
[Re: "Rogue of the Year: Sam Adams," WW, Dec. 30, 2009] I was very excited about Sam Adams becoming mayor of Portland. In technical terms, I thought (and still to this day) feel he was the best-qualified person when he sought the office. Sadly however, his repeated lies during the period before and after his election sullied his reputation and his trustworthiness. Because of that, I supported those who called for his resignation.
Since the recall effort failed, however, I accept that he should serve out the remaining three years left on his term in office. He's got to do MUCH more than what's been accomplished so far. He ceded much of the public spotlight to Randy Leonard and the City Council and seems at times absolutely rudderless. He needs to reassert himself and offer a bold vision for the city with the three years remaining on his term. It may not be easy but it can be done.
His career in elective politics beyond his current term in office is most likely over. Be that as it may, he owes it to himself and the city to take these three years and run it. It may not be an easy task, for he made a great many people, including folks like me, very angry. Even with that, much can be accomplished in this three-year period, including at the hands of a lame-duck mayor.
As for a second recall effort, I don't believe it's in the best interest of the city. The anger has been palpable on both sides and it isn't healthy. I've seen folks who generally agree on most things political take diametrically opposing views on the Adams issue and the net result is not good. With all the problems facing this community, we need a mayor and city council focused on city issues, not the would-be status of the incumbent mayor.

CORRECTIONS:
In last week's cover story, "Goats are the New Chickens," we incorrectly identified Brian Wong's occupation. He is a registered nurse and chair of the Montavilla Neighborhood Association. We also mentioned Cru Wine Bar, which is closed. The space is now home to Vintage Cocktail Lounge. WW regrets the errors.
