Cheap Eats 2005

A local chain that's spreading like melted cheese, the Schmizza's been throwing down pies all over the Portland area since 1993. And the draw here is still the throwing-the hand-thrown, bubble-prone crust, that is, a sturdy base for traditional toppers like cheese ($2.75 a slice, $15.99 for a large pie) or pepperoni ($3, $15.99). Non-purists can munch on a slice of the Extreme Veggie ($3.25), laden with greens like spinach, roasted peppers and even zucchini, or the Foo Foo ($3.25), which, goofy name aside, offers a distinctive, rich combo of sun-dried tomatoes and artichoke hearts, layered on mounds of feta.
