Cheap Eats 2008

As anyone who's driven by Apizza Scholls at 6 pm on a Friday night can attest, this is a thin-crust pizza town, and newcomer Dove Vivi took a serious risk by going deep-dish. Lucky for us, the gamble paid off. The tiny Glisan Street joint starts with a 12-inch buttery cornmeal crust and piles on the fresh toppings, which, depending on that day's special ($20), could include anything from housemade Italian sausage to broccoli rabe, fig jam or marinated leeks. Just don't expect any leftovers the next day—who knew cornmeal was an addictive substance? (KH)
