By Kurt Cobain
(Riverhead Books, 304 pages, $29.95)

Eight years after his death, the voice of Cobain rises from the ashes through this 304-page copy of his notebooks. Technically painful to read and no mark of his talent, it is a disservice to the artist and to his work.

The book was pre-hyped with published excerpts of titillating backstage teasers: drugs, Courtney, the rise of a rock star. It promised to be a great read. But once you get past the "gee whiz" factor of his handwriting and puzzling doodles, most of what's left is rather mundane.

The letters that are included, however, are different, showing a droll, feisty Cobain. In one, he describes a made-for-movie scene in which he and Nirvana bandmate Krist (Chris) Novoselic drop acid while watching Paul Revere and the Raiders on TV. Disgusted by the pre-fab performance, they start smashing bad albums in the house: "We busted about 250 shitty Chris Novoselic records. Not only did we clear more space in the living room, Chris declared that he feels cleansed and revitalized."

Beyond the letters, though, the book, which consists mostly of disconnected drawings, lists and lyrics, offers little insight. The actual journal entries, which are few, are mostly "this is your brain on drugs" babble. A more thoughtful set of footnotes might have helped answer why any of this matters.

It's a struggle to reconcile these words to the voice. Most of what knocked everyone out about Nirvana was Cobain's mesmerizing vocals. A contained explosion of sex, lust and world-weary wisdom, they sounded a maturity that belied his 20-odd years. Journals, however, is more "Dude, where's my rock band?" It discredits Cobain more than it enlightens his fans. Teresa DiFalco

Kurt's journals Teresa DiFalco? Who the fuck is that? And what the fuck is her problem? Personally I think that the "Journals" was a great book. Though it may not be insieful to her, I do feel enlightened...I feel like I know Kurt better than ever, and I, for one, am glad that the book was released.. —Jay

Kurt Cobain Journals I dont think Kurt's past personal buisness (journal) should be spread all over the place at bookstores, it should only belong to Courtney. No one else.... he hated his life enough, imagine how he'd feel.Imagine the reviews by those fucking pop bastards. They would talk so much shit about him. It is no one's buisness! Only Courtney's and if Kurt were here it wouldn't even be hers. And if so it would be between them. And people stop accusing Courtney for Kurt's death. You all weren't there, I wasn't so stop it! It is very immature.Courtney doesn't need it, she has enough pressure. And Frances doesn't need it, thats her mom. That's who she loves and thats who takes care of her. Frances is the only little piece of Kurt that Courtney has left. Courtney is a grown woman. And she has a child. She loved Kurt, and he's dead now. So leave her alone. Kurt was the best grunge artist, and Courtney was right beside him.Its quite sad how it ended. I hate how it ended. —Amy Rowe

Kurt's Journal I haven't read the journal yet bt i fully intended to. however i do feel kinda weird readin summit dat was so private to him. it kinda feels like it would b a violation of his privacy even though he's,unfortunaly, dead. Reading this article has only made me want to read the journal more so i can prove it wrong. —Leigh

kurt cobain i was devastated when i knew that kurt cobain was dead. im mad at him, yet i feel he is my hero. he was a brilliant man, who wasted a sweet life withuot trying hard enough to get help. why he died before he got old, no one will ever know, but somehow we all think we do. i cant tell you how lost i feel. good bye kurt. you said it all! —alissa gregory
