Beer Guide 2014: Beerded Brothers

Beerded Brothers

Defining what is or isn't an independent craft brewery has become a hot debate in recent years. For the wonkiest of enthusiasts, we present Vancouver's Beerded Brothers. Brothers Gabriel Pedersen and Maxwell Scudder brew in a garage that Scudder built—in their parents' backyard. They're not licensed to serve in the backyard, but they self-distribute kegs of their only current offering, an agave amber with a wonderful, warm caramel color that smells like honey and packs a bit of a kick at 7.8-percent ABV. Pending the success of a Kickstarter campaign to fund bottling and a brewing-system upgrade, Beerded Brothers may take on a wit or session ales. ADRIENNE SO.

DRINK THIS: The agave amber, of course.
